The Prince's Teaching Institute Awards Schools Programme Marks

Seventy-three departments from 51 schools have been awarded the Prince’s Teaching Institute’s first Schools Programme Mark – an award launched by HRH The Prince of Wales on 23 November.

The Schools Programme recognises and rewards the development of inspirational ideas and activities that enhance the teaching of English, History and Science. The Programme, which is open to all state secondary schools in England, was announced in November 2007. The 73 school departments recognised today are the first to be awarded the Mark.

School departments joining the Schools Programme are invited to demonstrate their commitment to their subject specialism both in their own professional development and by furthering their students’ understanding and enthusiasm in and out of lessons. In the first wave of the Programme, 85 school departments submitted proposals designed to increase challenge within the subject curriculum; develop their staff’s own specialist subject knowledge; enhance subject-based links outside school; and enthuse their pupils through subject-based activities beyond the curriculum. Those school departments that successfully realised their first year’s ambitions have been awarded the Mark.

Pupils from three of the schools to receive the Mark – Pimlico Academy and Holland Park School in London, and Ulverston Victoria High School in Cumbria – met HRH The Prince of Wales at Clarence House on 23 November. With their subject teachers, they presented The Prince of Wales their successful projects. Representatives from each of the 51 schools also attended.

The schools can now carry on their websites and stationery the PTI’s Schools Programme logo as evidence of their commitment to inspirational subject teaching.

Pimlico Academy’s Yanna Agirov (16) and Sabir Sufi (14) were accompanied by their History teacher, Ruth Oji.

Holland Park School’s Valmir Selimi (18) and Amin Amelial (14) were accompanied by assistant head and Chemistry teacher, Daniel Seed.

Ulverston Victoria High School’s Ross Callow (15) and Laura Moses (17) were accompanied by their English teacher, Tammy Nicholls.

The PTI announced today that 228 departments are taking part in the Schools Programme this year; those that will be awarded the Mark will be announced next November. The full list of the schools taking part in the Schools Programme is available by clicking here.
