The music of Abd al Malik can be used to engage students in French language and culture.

Perfect for KS4 or Sixth Form, al Malik's music addresses contemporary French issues of immigration, integration and secularism.

In the classroom, al Malik's lyrics can be studied like poetry, and the music will engage and attract students with its rhythm and rap.

Paul Haywood, who teaches MFL at The Henrietta Barnett School, was inspired to suggest this teaching idea after hearing Catherine Hampton (University of Warwick) speak about Music & Literature: Exploring culture and multiculturalism with popular music at the New Teacher Subject Day on French music.

Schools Programme members can download the resources from the event in the PTI Staffroom.
