Engaging younger students with learning French can be tricky.
Whilst using textbooks can be an important method of teaching it can potentially lead to glazed over eyes.
Why not try using French music to replace textbook content? Listen to a song and ask students to complete the following tasks in French:
- Identify cognates, verbs, adjectives and connectives
- Hold a Q&A focusing on identifying tenses
- Predict and write out a sequel to the song
- Analyse the music and lyrics
Paul Haywood, head of MFL at The Henrietta Barnett School, was inspired to suggest these teaching ideas after hearing Dr Catherine Hampton (University of Warwick) speak about Exploring culture and multiculturalism with popular music at a New Teacher Subject Day for French.
