Encouraging students to be creative is an excellent method of teaching German.

Literary texts, including poems and graphic novels, can be used to encourage pupils in their own writing.

This idea of using German literary texts to inspire creativity can be applied in the classroom by:

  • Using der Spiegel as a starting to point to encourage pupils to write their own poetry

This is an interesting and exciting way for students be creative whilst learning to write in another language. A great alternative to informative writing!

Claire Coombes, Head of Modern Languages at Ashfield Comprehensive School, was inspired to suggest this teaching idea after hearing Dr Lizzie Stewart (University of Cambridge) speak about Responding to current events: Literature and migration at our German CPD day on German literature at KS3-4: Die Lust am Lesen.

Schools Programme members and course attendees can download the resources from the event in the PTI Staffroom.
