Lope de Vega was a Spanish playwright, poet and novelist. He is a key figure of the Spanish Golden Age and Baroque literature.
Moorish and pastoral themes run throughout his work, but notably he portrayed elements of his own love affairs through his work.
Many of his poems are very accessible for use in the classroom. With its themes of love Un soneto de amor is a brilliant example to use around Valentine's day.
This accessible poem can be used to help teach Spanish in the classroom by:
- Reading out lines or words from the poem and asking the class to do the 'mannequin challenge', in turn acting out the poem
The Mannequin Challenge - ask your students to imitate mannequins by freezing in a pose that depicts the themes and/or events in the poem.
Jemma Marshall, Teacher and Spanish Coordinator at Lancaster Royal Grammar School, shared this idea after hearing Dr Arantza Mayo (Royal Holloway, University of London) speak about Spain Past and Present: History and Music, "The Spanish Golden Age" at the CPD Subject Day on The Golden Age and the Spanish Civil War.
Schools Programme members can download the resources from the event in the PTI Staffroom.
